The three-member Remediation Monitoring Oversight Board has been appointed to monitor and report on how the Department of Environment and Labour is performing as the primary regulator of the Sydney Tar Ponds and Coke Ovens Clean-up Project.
The creation of the Remediation Monitoring Oversight Board was announced in January 2007 when an environmental assessment approval was granted to the Sydney Tar Ponds Agency to move forward with the clean-up.
The Minister of Environment & Labour appointed Sinclair Dewis, Edwin MacLellan and Colin Hines to the Board. Mr. Dewis, who will be the chair, is a retired employee from Environment Canada with 35 years of service. Mr. MacLellan teaches engineering at Cape Breton University and Mr. Hines is a Principal with Atlantic Environmental Training & On-Site Services Inc.
The Board must submit a report to the Minister of Environment and Labour annually. Copies of the report will be made available to the public.
