All contractors and subcontractors working on the Sydney Tar Ponds and Coke Ovens Cleanup must comply with all aspects of the Sydney Tar Ponds Agency's Health and Safety Plan, including the medical surveillance protocol. This protocol requires that, before starting work, everyone working on the cleanup sites must have:
Full physical examination
Pulmonary function test including spirometry
Chest X-Ray and EKG
Blood work and urine tests deemed appropriate for hazardous waste work
Lead and arsenic screening
In addition, workers who may come into contact with sanitary sewage (for example, those working in the North or South Tar Ponds, or the Coke Ovens Brook Connector), must have hepatitis A & B and tetanus vaccinations.
